It’s said that Buckingham raided the Warner Brothers’ record archive for the unreleased tapes of The Beach Boy’s Smile, and that album had an impact on the writing of Tusk. Haunting it may be, it’s not around long enough to make a lasting impression.

Maybe Buckingham had a hand in turning this song down a few notches until it became a sick child of ‘Songbird’. McVie has a go at chopping down the Joshua Tree-like oeuvre of Rumours with a short, utterly despondent ballad. Nicks just sounds exhausted, and the sadness of the track comes across as artificial. But in this case, that’s because it’s just not there in the first place. It’ss eerie, smooth, and has that intangible not-really-there quality of a lot of Tusk’s sound. It’s one of the more famous tracks from Tusk, and as close as Nicks got to embracing Buckingham’s desire to move away from the Rumours sound. ‘Sara’ is a contribution uncharacteristic of Nicks – a six-minute slice of dream-pop. This can work to the benefit of the music, as later tracks will reveal, but Nicks in particular is missing her usual spark. The emotional turmoil and the catapult to fame that followed Rumours definitely took it out of the band and may explain why Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks sound particularly dogged and tired alongside Buckingham’s coke-fuelled excursions. If Rumours seemed personal, ‘Storms’ sounds like it has bypassed a privacy injunction in its emotional gratuity. Nicks, though, doesn’t seem remorseful for her actions nor does she take responsibility, aside from the faint admission ‘I have always been a storm’. The combination of Nicks’s weary vocals and Buckingham’s understated, sorrowful guitar tones makes for an uncomfortable listen and a song resigned to failure and self-pity.

‘Storms’ is an unsettling listen given the subject matter – a disastrous affair between Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks. One of the strangest songs released by Fleetwood, and undoubtedly one of their most beautiful. What’s more, forty years later Tusk broke up the band – with Buckingham’s desire to play their lesser known material one of the leading reasons for him being ousted by the other members in 2018. Tusk in no way helped the growing tensions between the band and resulted in the (underrated) course-correction of Mirage and later Tango in the Night.
